[It is unexpected, but it's not entirely unfamiliar. She can feel it starting like the same kind of strange buzzing that happens before she turns to find Kylo Ren staring at her, but when she looks this time-

There's nothing. It leaves her on edge, unsure of what's happening to her and why, and for a minute she's sure Kylo Ren has done something, bound them in some new and frustrating way... right until an entirely different voice says that word. It makes her jump, and she answers out loud because that's what she knows.

Thankfully, there's no one around to see her talking to herself.]

[It's an odd response he gets, all things considered- he never hears the reply, for starters. But Rey's confusion is apparent as anything as it filters to him like water through a sieve. For an instant he hesitates, unsure as to if he should speak, until he realizes she may not fully understand what he's doing.

He tries again.]

Master. If you can hear me, think of a sentence in your mind as if you were trying to speak to me.

[There. Hopefully that's a bit more helpful than simply just leaving her to it.]

[It comes almost hesitantly, like she's still suspicious of this but at least willing to let it go on so she can figure it out.]

[It's only after this message comes in that Rey realizes she should have expected it, that there was no way Arthur could have ever resisted touching base after her poor showing in the arenas. She understands from a mechanics standpoint after everything he's shown her that he'd think he would have to check on her, but what makes no sense is why he'd get to the point of typing out a message and not remember that she essentially hung up on him last time.

So why bother now?]

Do you get some kind of thrill out of asking people who don't open up to other people to open up to you?

[ He'd gone in expecting this kind of response. Knew she'd put up defenses and shields and verbally level a knife towards his person. Because she's built herself, trusted no one.

[ It's something he's only done in dreams, but the pain carries over. It feels real and he can't say the first hundred times weren't traumatizing. ]

[After last time she hadn't really expected being unfriendly to really work, so this time she tries something else.

But it's not malicious, and she isn't trying to hurt him. It's just that she can't do this with them being so unbalanced, with him asking her to open up while he gets to keep his own heart close, his cards played close to his chest.

So she tests him, because what else can she do?]
