It makes her jump, and she answers out loud because that's what she knows.

[It's an odd response he gets, all things considered- he never hears the reply, for starters. But Rey's confusion is apparent as anything as it filters to him like water through a sieve. For an instant he hesitates, unsure as to if he should speak, until he realizes she may not fully understand what he's doing.
He tries again.]
Master. If you can hear me, think of a sentence in your mind as if you were trying to speak to me.
[There. Hopefully that's a bit more helpful than simply just leaving her to it.]
[Ah, there's the reply. The hesitance is to be expected, honestly, so he tries to explain.]
Not just me, the both of us can. We have a mental link that connects us as part of the contract we've made. [A pause.] It was originally created to allow a Master and their Servant to remain in contact with each other when they were separated, but most use it for more than that. If you ever need to speak with me in private, this would be the easiest way.
Unless we're separated by unknown means, I'll always be able to hear you.
Okay. Good. [Oh, that feels a little too cruel to just let stand so she's quick to add-] I've had someone look into my head without my permission before, so it's not really something that comes with good memories.
This doesn't hurt, though. Is that because of the link?
[It's more likely that it doesn't hurt because Kylo Ren and Snoke forced their way into her head with no regard for her, but truthfully she had never considered the possibilty of something like this not feeling like hot knives slicing into her brain.]
[There's surprise there, not at her quick response, but at her explanation.] I've no intention to do anything like that, it wouldn't be right for me to pry. A contract is for the both of us to work together, not one person over another.
[A far cry from what he'd originally accepted when he was first summoned, but he firmly believes that it's better they work together rather than against each other.]
I've never heard of a link that hurts a Master and a Servant, so I would assume so. However, if this makes you uncomfortable, we can always forego in using it entirely.
