[He picks the right method, because Rey rarely responds well to people beating around the bush. She likes directness, hates wasting time.

She does like dinner though, and she likes Tommy. She could get to a place where she likes Lark too, and all of that combines into her not immediately saying no.

No thank you. She probably would have added the thank you.]

Why?

[She doesn't sound suspicious, or like she's going to say no. She's just curious.]

Because I avoided a lot of people during the flood. Because we're on rations, but people have forgotten you can make some fairly gourmet meals with rations--I'm sure Tommy has, and from what you've said, I don't think you've had anything that qualifies as gourmet.

So it's a celebration. Of sorts.

Not from the portions from Jakku.

[About the best thing you can do with those is grill the protein slices.]

I- Alright. I guess that would be fine.

Have you had much in the way of desserts yet?

[Those would have to be a shock if she ate mostly gel and powder-bread.]

[Once, on Jakku, she had found a ship buried in sand with better rations than she was used to. Included had been a kind of battered pastry that had been almost too sweet to eat, but it had quickly become the best thing she had ever eaten.

I've had ice cream and cookies, and Tiffany made cupcakes once.

[He chuckles] I should've known.

Well, in that case, I know what we'll be having. My cabin is 101; I'll see you both tomorrow.

Tomorrow, then.

[She's desperately curious about what he has in mind in the way of food, but any other motives are ones she's not aware she needs to be on the lookout for.

After a few long moments, she has something to add, though. It's possible she forgot.]

[He remembers the way Tommy's expression went soft and warm when Rey was brought up, and he can see more than a little of that charm now that so appeals to the aloof Mr Shelby.

So dinner is going to be a Thing and he's dying to see the two of them interacting.]

Oh- if you know any games, or songs, feel free to share them tomorrow. Alec and I have a bad habit of inventing our own, otherwise.

[She makes him laugh, Lark, you are in for a show.]

Tommy had mentioned teaching me to play cards, but I didn't take him up on it. I'm afraid I won't have much to share.

[She never learned games, or songs, and she does sound a little concerned about that. It would be so much better if she were able to show up to this meeting at least on the same page, but as she is now she's in a completely different book.]

[Lark has seen Tommy chuckle and snicker and shine with sarcasm. He has not really seen him laugh except once or twice, maybe.]

Oh I've got cards. We'll teach you after dessert.

Stories, too, are good--but Tommy has soldier songs to teach me, still. That may end up taking most of the night, they're a riot.

[There's a long pause there, and when Rey finally speaks again her voice has gone soft with just the tiniest hint of wonder.]

Tommy can sing?

[...Dammit, Rey, if you say it like that Lark is morally obligated to force Tommy to sing. No matter what.]

Only soldier songs. Which are a bit taboo.

That should make for an interesting evening, then.
