[It doesn't say much for him, or really just them in general, that she can't figure out right away why he's bringing this up. There's a small pause between what he says and her answer, but it comes all the same.]
It hasn't really sunk in yet. Right now I just keep getting caught up in thinking that half the reason I helped Steve at all would have been resolved if I had just waited a week.
[There are a few things she would change. His death, for example. And, because beating around the bush is getting tedious and she'd rather just find the point if there is one to this, she decides to just go ahead and ask.]
[He isn't, but he considered replying with do you want an honest answer? and that just seemed like a little much. He's not fine and he doesn't try hiding it, but he also doesn't want to talk about it.]
[Of course she doesn't buy that, but she's not going to protest it over the communicators. She's not going to protest it in person, either, but all the same she shows up at his door with two bottles of whiskey, one to replenish whatever stockpile he has and one for them to drink, because whatever is going on with him, having a drink and some company can't hurt.
So she's there, and she knocks, and he can just deal with with that.]
[She doesn't expect to just waltz in. In truth, she doesn't expect anything from him, he's proven time and time again he's not in any place to give anyone anything terribly meaningful, but even if they hadn't slept together she'd still be here with a drink to offer him.
She also thought he might find it easier to tell her whatever it is he contacted her about in person, so here she is.]
[She does, and she looks around a little more this time only as much as it takes to find where he's got some glasses sitting out. It only makes sense to her to get straight to the point.]
He's started giving out going away presents. [She means Alfie, of course, because all of this came up because of him.] He gave me a necklace that was his mother's.
[It's around her neck now, just the chain visible because she's tucked the rest under her shirt.]
[Once she has the glasses poured she brings them over, hands his glass out to him.]
And then he started talking about the children he'll have, how he'll tell them fairy tales about me. [Her shoulders lift up, half a shrug and half a shiver, because she's still not sure how to feel about that.] Thinking back on it now I'm not convinced he wasn't drunk.
He was almost certainly drunk. [He says, but he isn't sure about that at all: in his time, Alfie's a teetotaler, or at least claims to be. He's just odd, drink or not.]
All the same, Rey... [He trails off and shakes his head, accepting the whiskey.]

He's bloody sentimental, that one.

He absolutely is. The last thing I ever expected was to be given something that belonged to his mother.
